Our Trip with Free Spirit December 21 2017

Every December as soon as school finishes, I like to take the boys on a mini break. Partly to avoid the craziness in the lead up to Christmas, but more importantly to feel instantly like we are on holidays. By the end of the year our boys are exhausted and of course, so am I.

The thought of driving somewhere with tired, fighting boys in the back seat did not appeal at all so when we got the chance to try Free Spirit Airlines regional destinations, we jumped at the chance. For me, it was an awesome way to treat the boys and to fly somewhere new for just a few days of quality time to reconnect after a busy year.

From Essendon Fields you can fly to so many regional destinations (see below) and Merimbula was our choice! I have great childhood memories of this relaxed coastal town and I knew our boys would love it too. Flying directly from Essendon Fields airport also appealed, avoiding the busy major airports, their extra stress, time and parking costs!

From start to finish, the trip was hassle free. Getting to and parking at Essendon Fields was so easy. It was probably 20 metres from the car park to the check in desk and not long after, we boarded our plane. The plane was smaller than usual, but the boys loved it and only one hour later and we touched down in Merimbula. No fights, no boredom and no “are we there yet?” whinging from the back seat.

We got directly transferred just a five minute drive to Coast Resort Merimbula (it is also only ten minutes in the other direction to Pambula). After the excitement of choosing their beds and checking out the two pools subsided, we walked to the beach. The Sapphire Coast has so much to offer in terms of accommodation but I can highly recommend Coast Resort for the family sized apartments and facilities.

Directly in front is the beach, plus a fantastic park, great coffee and meals at Cranky’s Cafe, as well as a Fish & Chip shop (very important!) Directly behind the resort is Merimbula Lake with a short walk into town. The area provided endless adventures for the boys and we barely touched the surface of things to do in the area. There is also a fun park (Magic Mountain), Top Fun (bowling, mini golf, laser tag), plus a million other water activities on the lake and ocean (including whale watching at certain times of the year).

For me, Christmas is all about reconnecting and spending time with the ones you love the most. Quality time is hard to find and our little mini break removed all the stress of the year as we adventured away together. Walking, exploring and just enjoying the outdoors with plenty of time on our hands. Nothing flash, just our little tribe enjoying each others company. Raising four young boys can be tough, even tougher if they don’t get along, so this was exactly what we needed to start our summer holidays off right.

We are already planning our next little trip away (Port Macquarie looks good!) and when quality time is of the essence, we will definitely look to fly from Essendon Fields again. It was definitely hassle free and three days away felt like a week. We arrived without the stress of every day life on our shoulders and I got to spend so much quality time with our boys.

I also need to investigate a Girls Trip (maybe to eat & drink our way around King Island) for some rest and recovery after the school holidays are over! There are three operators with regular scheduled services that fly from www.essendonfields.com.au to 8 regional destinations.

Check them out:

1. Victoria: Warrnambool and Portland

2. Tasmania: Burnie/Wynyard, Flinders and King Islands

3. New South Wales: Merimbula, Dubbo and Port Macquarie
